AFS Ottawa 2008 Student Information
Welcome to Canada’s beautiful capital city. Ottawa is a student-friendly city and is home to two of the largest universities in Canada. Student academic and social lives intertwine in the dozens of restaurants, pubs and clubs in the downtown Byward market. The downtown core of the city is situated between the scenic Ottawa River and the historic Rideau Canal, which has just been designated as a World Heritage Site. With plenty of access to these waterways from downtown, countless sight-seeing, boat tours and angling opportunities abound.
A full day of student activities is planned for Tuesday, August 19th, 2008. The day starts off with the ever-popular student-mentor lunch, where students are given the opportunity to meet and network with mentors from industry, government and academia. This event is followed by the student colloquium and career fair. Finally, the night is capped off with an off-site student social in the Byward market, featuring great live music, snacks and beverages. The day is organized to provide students with excellent opportunities to network with mentors and other students and also to enable students to have fun and enjoy the great social venues that Ottawa has to offer.
Student-Mentor Lunch
The student-mentor lunch is designed to bring together students with mentors in fisheries science for an informal lunch held at one of the many fine establishments in downtown Ottawa. This event provides both parties with the occasion to discuss their experiences, opportunities, and challenges in fisheries science. This event has been gaining popularity over the past few years, so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Students and mentors will each have the opportunity to register for this event on your meeting registration form.
Student Colloquium
The always popular student colloquium provides a unique opportunity for students to attend talks from a panel of distinguished speakers on topics related to education, employment and opportunities. This forum enables students to learn from leaders in fisheries science. Questions, comments and informal discussions are encouraged.
Career Fair
All students and AFS members are invited to attend the 2008 Career Fair. This event brings together industry, government, and academia to educate students and young professionals about exciting career opportunities.
Exhibitors should contact Michael Donaldson mdonald2@connect.carleton.ca to reserve an exhibition table at the Career Fair
Student Social
The 2008 student social is being held in the vibrant Byward market, which is located only 5-minutes from the conference hotel. Great live music, tasty snacks and drinks will be offered. This event is a fun way to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.
