November 2, 2009 ASCE Webinar on Fish Friendly Infrastructure Design: A wide variety of infrastructure projects, designed and implemented by civil engineers, can have unintended impacts on fish and other aquatic organisms. However, most engineers get no or little training concerning biological and physical processes of watershed dynamics, including fish biology. This lack of knowledge of biological/engineering interface can result in long delays, redesign and suboptimal solutions both for the natural resources and for the intended purpose of the infrastructure. This introductory webinar will give Civil Engineer and managers the concepts, contacts and resources to improve design for both human and natural infrastructure. The Section has established a Student Travel Award. The award, named in honor of former Section President Ned Taft, will begin in 2010. The Section recognizes that student attendance at AFS Annual and Division meetings frequently is problematic because of the costs for travel and accommodations. To encourage Annual and Division meeting participation by students specializing in bioengineering-related research, the Section has established a travel award program to reimburse travel costs up to a maximum of $800. Two awards will be made each year. Additional awards are possible and subject to Section Executive Committee (EXCOM) authorization. Requirements for award include completion of the application and presentation of an oral or poster presentation on a bioengineering-related topic at the Annual or Division Meeting (note: alternative meeting presentations are possible subject to review and approval of the Section EXCOM). Additional information and eligibility requirements are available in the Travel Award Application.
The Section has initiated a Continuing Education Program beginning at this year’s Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN. This year’s course Tools and Techniques for Upstream Fish Passage will be held Sunday, August 30 prior to the start of the Annual Meeting. The Section is also sponsoring a symposium at this year’s annual meeting titled Promoting Innovations in Fish Passage and Protection. This symposium will be held Monday-Tuesday, August 31 – September 1. For more information on both initiatives, see the “Continuing Education” and “Symposia” pages of this web site.
