Susan B. Martin Scholarship

 

American Fisheries Society Mission Statement

The mission of the American Fisheries Society is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources

and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries

professionals.

American Fisheries Society Objectives

1. Promote the conservation, development and wise use of the fisheries;

2. Promote and evaluate the development and advancement of all branches of fisheries science and practice;

3. Gather and disseminate to society members and the general public scientific, technical and other information

about fisheries science and practice through publications, meetings, and other forms of communication;

4. Encourage the teaching of fisheries science and practice in colleges and universities and the continuing

professional development of fisheries workers.

Scholarship Overview: The Susan B. Martin Scholarship was established by the Idaho Chapter of the American

Fisheries Society in 2008. This scholarship is intended to continue Susan’s legacy of mentoring and fostering the

development of aquatic scientists at all levels. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist with college education costs

of graduate students whose professional goals support the mission and objectives of the American Fisheries Society.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Be a graduate student at any Idaho college or university during the next academic year

2. Have career goals that advance the mission and objectives of the American Fisheries Society

Amount: $1000

Selection Criteria (not in order of relevance):

1. Academic record

2. Career goals

3. Experiences that enhance the student as a professional

4. Letter of recommendation from a from a biology professor, faculty advisor, or administrator

5. Demonstrated examples of mentoring and inspiring the growth and development of aquatic scientists.

Application Process: Complete an application package which consists of the following items:

1. A completed application form and resume (available at: http://www.idahoafs.org/)

2. A statement of your career goals (300 words or less)

3. A letter of recommendation from a from a biology professor, faculty advisor, or administrator

4. A copy of your college transcripts

All application materials must be sent together in one application package. Submit the application package to:

Application Deadline: January 15, 2010

Notification: The winners will be announced during the business luncheon at the annual meeting of the Idaho Chapter

of the American Fisheries Society in 2010. Winners will also be notified directly by March 31st.
