10/6/2008 The Schedule-at-a-Glance page and Presenters Instructions have been posted, and the Continuing Education page has been updated (additional information about some of the courses). Check the main Annual Meeting Link above for this information.

Also of note:

The Scientific Presentation and Speaking Skills classes still have plenty of slots available and were brought back and expanded this year into an introductory and intermediate two-day class option because of the rave reviews from participants last year.  People who took the class last year can sign up for the second day session to improve on and expand their skills with material not offered last year in the one-day class.  Don't miss this great opportunity to improve your presentation skills and to get more comfortable speaking in front of groups. In order to ensure these two classes are well attended, the organizing committee has opted to offer this class to both members and non-members at the early registration rate of $250/day. So, even though the early registration has passed, you can still get into one or both of these classes at the pre-registration rate!

For those of you who pre-registered last week and paid, you should have received an automated statement via e-mail from the Alaska Chapter with your statement attached.  If you have not yet received such a statement, please send an e-mail to our Treasurer, Lee Ann Gardner, at rwjconsulting@ak.net so she can get your early registration statement to you.

For those of you who missed the pre-registration deadline, you can STILL send your registration form and payment to Lee Ann up until Oct. 17 at the late registration rate.  After Oct. 17, registration will be on-site at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.

9/17/2008 The Continuing Education page has been updated (clarifying that one of the course offerings was two 1-day workshops), additionally the pre-registration form has been updated to separately identify each day of the workshop. The Western Division of the AFS (WD AFS) is losing their web master. Mary Whalen must resign from her position immediately. If you have any skills with websites, or want to develop them, the Division needs you. The Division also desperately needs a newsletter editor. As you may have observed from the last issue, we have now gone electronic. This makes the job much easier, less expensive, and more creative. Both of these critical positions are excellent ways for building your resume, communicating your ideas, and contributing to the Division.

If you want to know what is involved with being a webmaster or editor, please contact Mary at mary_whalen@usgs.gov as soon as possible. The WD is losing its ability to communicate with its members at a very critical time.

Robert M. Hughes (Hughes.Bob@epamail.epa.gov), President-elect, Western Division AFS.

8/3/2004 AFS 2005 - 135th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society
   Anchorage, Alaska, 11-15 September 2005

Excerpted from the page at the link above (check there for the most up-to-date information):

Make plans now to come to the 135th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society, co-convening with the annual meetings of the Western Division AFS and the Alaska Chapter AFS along with the 23rd Lowell Wakefield Symposium on Pacific Rockfishes! The meeting is at the Egan Convention Center and Performing Arts Center in Anchorage, 11-15 September 2005. The meeting’s theme will be Creating A Fisheries Mosaic: Connections Across Jurisdictions, Disciplines, and Cultures. A “mosaic” represents a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. We expect you will find the collection of events, symposia, and contributed papers in Anchorage to be a stimulating mosaic of fishery and aquatic science, culture, and adventure. Anchorage will be an outstanding venue to advance your professional networking and to keep current on emerging ideas in fisheries science and management, with the added bonus of an opportunity to experience some of Alaska’s scenery, wilderness, and recreational adventures. The meeting theme reflects President Barbara Knuth’s Program of Work for her year in office, emphasizing the notion of “connections.” World-renowned fisheries artist Ray Troll has designed a stunning and inspiring meeting poster in keeping with this theme, and will speak about the convergence of his art and fisheries science as one of the meeting’s plenary session speakers. Other plenary speakers will address the relationship of indigenous knowledge with western science and fisheries management (Patricia Cochran, Alaska Native Science Commission), and emerging partnerships between business and non-profits for promoting sustainable commercial fisheries and educating consumers about the importance of making appropriate seafood choices (Heather Tausig, New England Aquarium). We encourage symposia that build on these themes, and other themes of connections across jurisdictions, disciplines, and cultures. The First Call for Symposia and Papers is now available.
