American Fisheries Society
Alaska Chapter - STUDENT UNIT
The Student Unit was organized as a sub unit of the Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society in 1987 to promote the involvement of students at Alaskan colleges and universities in the affairs of the American Fisheries Society and in the understanding and wise use of Alaska fish and fisheries.  The student unit provides a forum for students and others to interact with practicing fisheries scientists through guest lectures, meetings, and activities.

An integrated approach to monitoring water quality of shallow lakes in Central Alaska:

The Central Alaska Network consists of three national park units located in interior Alaska: Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve.

This network of parks is currently designing a long term monitoring program to track changes in the surface area of shallow lakes across the park landscape. This program also seeks to characterize and monitor changes in the physical, chemical and biologic structure of these important wetland ecosystems. Amy will provide an overview of the shallow lake monitoring program being developed by the National Park Service in interior Alaska. Her presentation will include background information regarding the concerns related to patterns of lake drying in interior Alaska, a brief summary of the parameters the NPS intends to measure and a general overview of the sampling design being employed by the network to monitor shallow lakes.

Feeding Dynamics and Stool Recovery of Humpback and Broad Whitefish in Alaska:

The diets of humpback whitefish Coregonus pidschian and broad whitefish C. nasus have been investigated by many scientists in many habitats. Common food items include mussels, clams, snails, crustaceans, insect larvae, zooplankton, and even plant matter. Generally, the bivalves and snails are reported to be the largest component of stomach content by mass. A 2004 stool sampling study in the Kanuti and Selawik National Wildlife Refuges revealed that virtually all intact bivalves and snails were alive after passing through the digestive tracts of fish, which took as much as 48 hours at times. Details of recent studies and a discussion of the implications of the findings will be the topic of the student chapter AFS meeting.

We participated in the fall stream cleanup, organized by the Mendenhall Watershed Program on Nov. 3rd, cleaning up our section of Jordan Creek. We also opted to clean up part of Montana Creek near the trailhead. The area is looking good!

There are approximately 10 students attending the AFS Sitka meeting, 8 of which are presenting. We are currently getting raffle prizes together and will hopefully have some interesting things for the meeting.

That's all for now. Cabin socials will be along shortly when the snow is good and the weather is sunny (i.e. not any specific time). Hope that helps, and thanks for your patience.
