UAF American Fisheries Society Student Unit
Annual Report – May 2005
Miranda Plumb, President
The Fairbanks Student AFS officers for the 2004-2005 academic year were
Miranda Plumb, President; Theresa Tanner, Vice-President; Aaron Martin,
Secretary; and Melissa Robinson, Treasurer.
Our fall meetings and activities got off to a late start because the officers
are graduate students and some were in the field for part of the semester. Even with this late start we hit the ground running and have planned and
accomplished many great meetings and activities.
One of our first tasks was to purchase water bottles with our chosen AFS logo
printed on them. We successfully sold these at our monthly meetings and at
the AK annual meeting. We used the money raised to buy snacks and
beverages for the monthly meetings and for the potluck/bbq mentioned below.
The UAF student group has been very active in attracting students and local
fisheries professionals to campus for a variety of programs. We have had
monthly meetings on campus with speakers from both the UAF and professional
communities. A list of those meetings is attached. We sell raffle
tickets at the beginning of each meeting and raffle off a book and a water
bottle. The books were donated by the National AFS bookstore.
In October and November 2004 we worked with the other AK campus groups to
organize the AK chapter annual meeting in
Sitka. We gathered raffle and door prizes from various local businesses, and
volunteered our time to help with registration and other aspects of the annual
meeting.
We also participated in the Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS).
We helped to gather volunteers to judge the science symposium, March 5, 2005. We presented an award for Best Aquatics Paper.
This was the first year
that we attended ASHSSS and we are committed to making this an annual affair. We hope that our participation will generate more interest in aquatic
sciences. The student award winner, Nicole Jeffery of Barrow, received a $200 cash award
and a one-year student membership to the American Fisheries Society. The
Alaska Chapter of AFS assisted the Fairbanks Student Chapter in sponsoring this
award. They generously agreed to match the $100 that the Fairbanks Student
AFS could award, and also added the one-year student membership.
We also sponsored a Continuing Education Course at the University
of
Alaska Fairbanks
campus. The course, “GIS and Remote Sensing in Freshwater Systems”,
was a 2-day workshop, March 26-27, and introduced attendees to the basics of
ArcGIS 9 and its extensions.
Just recently, April 29, we held a potluck/bbq social with the UAF AFS
student group and the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS). SFOS paid the rental fee for the Musher’s Hall in
Fairbanks
and the AFS student group paid for food and other supplies.
At least 12 UAF students will be attending the National AFS meeting in
September, many of them will be presenting their work.
