American Fisheries SocietyEqual Opportunities SectionThe Equal Opportunities Section works to encourage the exchange of information pertinent to the promotion of employment, education, scholarships, participation, professionalism, and recruitment for all individuals in the fisheries profession. The Section administers the J. Frances Allen Scholarship program, fosters mentoring of under-represented groups via an annual mentoring award and luncheon, and publishes a newsletter. Our goal is to increase the representation and involvement of diverse ethnic/racial groups and females in the American Fisheries Society. The 2008 Mentoring for Diversity Award application is available and the call for nominees is due by July 31, 2008. The call for EOS Travel Award applications and the Cover Letter with Criteria for the Ottawa meeting in 2008 is now available. For more on the 2008 Annual Meeting itself, visit the parent society. Leadership Workshop Invitation The Leadership Workshop on Sunday, 17 August, is an opportunity for AFS members, and especially all incoming unit leaders and committee chairs, to learn how to become more effective volunteer leaders of the Society. Although originally designed for new president-elects and committee chairs, all Society members are invited to attend. Ideally, each AFS unit will send at least one person to this workshop, preferably a rising leader. The orientation affords excellent training and insight on how the Society works, and about leadership principles in general. The presentations will cover leadership concepts you can use on your job as well! We have a large room reserved for our use, so please make it a point to join us. These sessions have become an exciting common ground for the exchange of leadership techniques and ideas. The workshop will be led by Dirk Miller, with assistance from various AFS leaders, and will be held in the Governor General 1 room in the Westin at 8:00 am.
