  • Bernard A. Megrey Well, based on many comments returned to me via email, it looks like the response to Enotes is extremely positive! Thanks to all who took the time to express their feelings.

It turned out EVERY IFS member has an email address so distribution of Enotes will be a breeze. I had to track down a couple email addresses with a phone call. Only 3 email addresses bounced back out of 129. Fortunately I have mailing addresses for the membership so I only needed to mail out 3 copies.

Talk about international activity - read on for news on book donations to China, potential interactions with Mexican scientists, visits to Japan, World Fisheries Congress activity, new cooperative agreements with Australian Society of Fish Biologists, a collection of international news feed articles and much more.

Send me a news items from your locale or a piece of information to share with the membership. Contributions are most welcome. As always feedback (positive or negative) and suggestions will be most appreciated.

Send any comments to me at bern.megrey@noaa.gov

Free Scientific Journals Available to Developing Nations

Several free library services are available to developing nations. Click here for more information

      World Fisheries Congress

4th World Fisheries Congress On November 12-13, 2001, the 4th World Fisheries Congress Program Committee met for the first time on the University of British Columbia Campus in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. I participated in the meeting along with IFS and International Steering Committee members Max Stocker and Vidar Wespestad. A provisional program was put together including topic sessions and a preliminary list of keynote speakers. These are being circulated to International Steering Committee members and others for comment.

You can see a more detailed chronology of the section's involvement by going to the section web page by clicking here or click here to go to a web page summarizing 4th World Fisheries Congress activity.

Student AFS Memberships from the Carl R. Sullivan International Membership  Program Continue

The Carl R. Sullivan International Membership Endowment Program was established to grant full American Fisheries Society memberships to scientists, biologists, and mangers from english speaking countries. Benefits include full paid membership in AFS for 3 years, a choice of one hardcopy or two electronic journals, the monthly AFS magazine Fisheries, and discounted purchase of books and journals.

More information on the Sullivan Award Program, including past and current recipients can be found on the section web page by clicking here.

Reciprocal Membership Agreement with the Australian Society of Fish Biology   Established

Recently the International Fisheries Section entered into a reciprocal agreement with the Australian Society of Fish Biology (ASFB) to exchange memberships for students.

IFS has received a proposal from the ASFB to sponsor a membership for an AFS student. The details of this proposal are being worked on now. IFS is also working with the Fisheries Society of the British Isles to establish a program for graduate students of that society receiving grants to become AFS members. Hopefully these will all be finalized by our annual meeting this August. Currently the Section is looking for a new "Chairperson" to take over this very worthwhile effort.

Contact Glen Contreras for further information.

AFS Book and Journal Donations to China

As part of its ongoing journal donation program, the IFS is preparing to donate a long list of AFS titles to the Shanghai Fisheries University in China.

If you have old journals (AFS or otherwise), old books (fish and related science), proceedings, special reports (agency reports or from any good source) that are collecting dust and are interested in donating them to some deserving international library, then please contact me. The International Fisheries Section can find them a good home.

      GET INVOLVED!

Expect to see this part of Enotes on a permanent basis. All section activity is accomplished through the hard work of a group of volunteers and there are numerous areas where the section could use some assistance. We are currently looking for volunteers to

  • maintain the section web page and/or serve as newsletter editor
  • serve on a nominating committee
  • people to run for office
  • coordinate journal donations
  • serve on the International Endowment Committee

Also, please feel free to let us know activities or areas you think might be worthwhile for the section to get involved or opportunities you see that are relevant to the section.

Recent Article on Global Fisheries Declines Still in the News

In the last issue of Enotes we reported a recent article which indicated that declines in global fisheries resources are masked by over-reporting of catches. This article has received a lot of press as of late.

You can read the complete Nature article by clicking here.

You need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the Portable Document Format (PDF) files. To download the latest version of the Acrobat Reader, click on the icon below:

AFS/IFS Looks to Mexico for Expanded Membership and Scientific Interaction

In April 2002 I will be visiting fisheries laboratories and institutions in LaPaz Mexico where I hope to make contact with our scientific colleagues to the south. I plan to present a seminar on the benefits of joining AFS and hope to give away several memberships to Mexican scientists. I'll be reporting more on the outcome of this visit in later issues.

IFS President visits Japan to promote AFS and the World Fisheries Congress

In January 2002 I had the privilege of visiting Japan for a North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) international modeling workshop. While there on "official" business I took the opportunity to acquaint Pacific Rim scientists from Japan, Korea, Russia and China with AFS and the upcoming World Fisheries Congress. Visited were the Nemuro Fisherman Research Institute in the City of Nemuro on the northern island of Hokkaido, Hokadate Fisheries University, and the Frontier Research Institute for Global Climate Change in Yokohama. While in Tokyo I had a wonderful experience visiting the world famous Tsukiji Central Wholesale Fish Market, where bluefin tunas are auctioned off at $30,000 per fish!!! On January 5, 2001, the first auction of the year, a 444 lb bluefin was auctioned off for $174,000US.

It was shocking to get a realistic sense of the massive quantity of aquatic products sold in one day in one city. The Tsukiji Fish Market sells 3,000 tons/day of marine products consisting of 450 species of animals. These figures are unparalleled in the world.

Click here or here to see a picture of me amidst a sea of frozen bluefin tunas just before the early morning auction. Another photo can be viewed by clicking here.

      International Endowment Fund

I'm extremely happy to report that contributions to the newly established International Endowment Fund have been accumulating at quite a rapid pace. As of the date of this version of Enotes, the Fund has almost quadrupled from the original $1,000 seed money contributed by the International Fisheries Section. Here is a summary of subunit support to date:

    Marine Fisheries $400
    Fisheries Law $100
    Water Quality $500
    Early Life History $500
    Estuaries $150
    Computer User $250
    Fisheries Management $250
    Fish Administrators $250
    Equal Opportunity $500
    Original seed money $1,000

    TOTAL $3,900

Sincere thanks to all who have supported the Fund.

Because of high level of support and keen interest expressed by AFS, I feel it is appropriate to repeat some background information on the goals of the fund from the last issue of Enotes.

The International Endowment Fund will provide long-term future opportunities for the Society and the International Fisheries Section (IFS) to support international fisheries activities that support the Society's long term international goals. Currently, international members are not subsidized by American Fisheries Society (AFS) dues pass back to Divisions or Chapters. The Endowment Fund is a way to "payback" the international members who have and will continue to support the Society. AFS members have wanted for many years to provide a source of funding support for international activities. This fund will help the Society meet its Strategic Plan goals for international programs.

This endowment will be managed by the AFS and when sufficient investment revenues become available, proceeds will be administered by a committee, established by the International Fisheries Section, and used for a variety of international programs and projects. The committee will prepare guidelines, protocols, and related administrative tasks. We see proceeds from the fund being used to support activities such as sponsoring international memberships, purchasing books and journals, supporting speakers here and abroad, providing seed money for international conferences, symposia and workshops, and to helping to publish articles and books. We are planning on targeting students, biologists, managers and scientists during the early stages of their career as recipients of grants and awards.

At the 3rd World Fisheries Congress the International Fisheries Section Executive Committee voted to contribute $1,000 to start the fund. The IFS presented a proposal to establish the fund at the 2001 midterm AFS governing board meeting. The proposal was approved by the Governing Board. The IFS offers this contribution as a challenge to other AFS subunits to begin building for our Society's future in international fisheries. All AFS subunits will be encouraged to participate and support the fund's activities. Also 50% of the raffle proceeds from the next AFS meeting will be devoted to building the fund.

More information on the fund and this project can be found section web page. Please note that the International Section is looking for people to serve on a committee to develop a charter, terms of reference and selection criteria (see below).

More information can be found on the section web page.
