Paper/Poster Awards

Professionals and students are encouraged to present their work at the annual spring IAFS meeting by responding to the "call for papers/posters". Included are the judge’s evaluation form(s) for Paper and Poster presentations (Click Here for a Copy). Awards are presented at the annual Fall IAFS meeting for the following:

Best Professional Paper

Best Professional Poster

Best Student Paper

Best Student Poster

IAFS Student Travel Award

The recipient of the Best Student Paper is offered the IAFS Student Travel Award of $100 to present at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference. If he/she declines, the award is secondarily offered to the Best Student Poster recipient. If neither winner accepts the award, the Awards Committee, with the approval of IAFS EXCOM, may consider applications from other students (Place mouse cursor over Award for a description).

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to a student attending an Indiana school to present his/her fisheries research at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference.

Description: A grant of $100 from the Indiana Chapter.

Eligibility criteria: This award is offered to the Best Student Paper recipient from the IAFS spring meeting to present at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference. If he/she declines, the award is secondarily offered to the Best Student Poster recipient. If both decline the award, the Awards Committee, with the approval of IAFS EXCOM, may consider applications from other students. Notification the award is open to IAFS student applicants will be e-mailed to members and posted on the IAFS web site. Applicants should submit a short (one page) justification and a copy of their abstract to the Awards Chair for committee review.

Deadline: The deadline for accepting the award is July1^stof the year offered.

Presentation: The award will be presented at the fall IAFS meeting or mailed to the recipient prior to the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference.

Notifications: Upon acceptance, the IAFS President will notify North Central Division (prior to the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference) of the IAFS Student Travel Award recipient in order to be eligible for the Joan Duffy Student Travel Award - which matches Chapter student travel awards up to $100. Students will be honored and checks presented during the NCD Business Meeting at the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference.

Nomination Based Awards

Nomination based awards are announced at the fall IAFS fall business meeting followed by a "call for nominations" via the November newsletter. Nominations should be submitted to the awards chair by December 21 of the following year. Awards are presented at the annual spring IAFS technical meeting for the following (Place mouse cursor over Award for a description):

Most Active Organization in Indiana Fisheries

Purpose: To recognize an organization that makes an outstanding contribution to any Indiana fishery.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates for the award shall be any Indiana based organization or state chapter of any national organization. The candidates shall have made outstanding contributions to any Indiana fishery within the last two years.

Selection criteria: Candidates for the award may be nominated by any Indiana chapter member. The deadline for submitting written nominations shall be posted in the chapter’s fall newsletter.

Excellence in Fisheries Science

Purpose: To recognize an Indiana AFS chapter member who has make an outstanding contribution to fisheries science in Indiana. This contribution may be a single activity or a collection of achievements over the individual’s career. Former Indiana AFS chapter members may be nominated if most of their work occurred while they were chapter members.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates for the award shall be (or shall have been) employed as a professional (i.e. Teacher, researcher, administrator, etc.) in the field of fisheries science in Indiana during the period of accomplishment for which he or she is being considered for the award. The candidates shall be (or shall have been) IAFS chapter members and may be retired but must be living when nominated.

Selection criteria: Candidates for the award shall be nominated by any two Indiana chapter members. The deadline for submitting written nominations shall be posted in the chapter’s fall newsletter.

Outstanding Student Research

Purpose: To recognize outstanding student research in fisheries science or aquatic biology at any Indiana college or university.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates for the award must be a graduate or undergraduate students at any Indiana college or university, or have satisfactorily completed requirements for graduation at such an institution within the calendar year preceding the annual spring meeting. The major focus of their research should be in fisheries science or aquatic biology. Each candidate’s document may be a typed report, thesis, or published paper. Each candidate must also be sole author or senior author when no other student is a junior author.

Selection criteria: Candidates for the award may be nominated by any Indiana chapter member. The deadline for submitting written nominations shall be posted in the chapter’s fall newsletter.

Exceptional New Member

Purpose: To recognize outstanding student research in fisheries science or aquatic biology at any Indiana college or university.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates for the award shall be Indiana AFS chapter members who have joined the chapter within the last three years. The candidates shall have gone beyond the call of duty to better the chapter or fisheries profession in Indiana.

Selection criteria: Candidates for the award may be nominated by any Indiana chapter member. The deadline for submitting written nominations shall be posted in the chapter’s fall newsletter.
