2008 Northeastern Division Annual Meeting Summary

The Northeastern Division (NED) held its annual meeting in conjunction with the 64th Northeast Fish and Wildlife Conference, April 27-30, 2008 at the Marriott Seaview Spa and Resort in Galloway, New Jersey.  This year’s conference theme was “Fish and Wildlife Management in the Northeast:  New Challenges, New Roles, New Tools”.  A highlight of the meeting was a special symposium on management of large rivers featuring presentations by 22 speakers organized by NED members Dave Day (PA Fish and Boat Commission) and Ken Sprankle (USFWS).  About 30 members attended the NED business meeting and were addressed by AFS President Mary Fabrizio and Executive Director Gus Rassam on recent and future initiatives by AFS.  The NED gave out several awards at the meeting.  The John Moring Student Travel Awards went to Ivan Mateo (U. of Rhode Island), Yoichiro Kanno (U. of Connecticut), and Jay Turnure (Rutgers University).  Peter Stevens of Cornell University won Best Student Paper Award for his presentation “Implementing a topographic index (TI) model to predict brook trout habitat usage and identify candidate lakes for wild brook trout population restoration.”  Ivan Mateo of the University of Rhode Island won Best Student Poster entitled “Spatial variations in otolith microchemistry for Tautoga onitis in Narragansett Bay.”  At the conference Tuesday evening banquet, NED President Scott Decker presented Dr. Boyd E. Kynard with the Dwight Webster Memorial Award, the NED’s highest honor.  Dr. Kynard was recognized for his many contributions in the areas of anadromous fish restoration, fish passage research, and fisheries education during the 30 years he worked in the Northeast.  Dr. Kynard recently retired from the USGS-BRD Silvio Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center.
